Smith's Union Bar, nestled in the heart of Honolulu at 19 N Hotel St, is not just any bar—it’s a storied local institution that pulses with rich history and authentic island spirit. As the oldest bar on Oahu, Smith’s embodies a rugged charm that warmly invites patrons to step back in time. Originally serving servicemen and women during WWII, including those from the USS Arizona, its weathered walls are steeped in decades of stories, camaraderie, and aloha spirit. You can almost feel the echoes of history as you take in the iconic details, like the hull-like design running along the upper walls—an homage to its naval heritage.
Walking into Smith’s Union Bar is like entering a sanctuary for both locals and travelers craving a genuine, no-frills Hawaiian bar experience. It’s far from pretentious; there are no fancy napkins or glacier-cold blasts of air conditioning here. Instead, you’re greeted by an atmosphere that’s hot, a bit gritty, and buzzing with the genuine energy of a bartender’s bar. Reviewers like T Clev aptly call it “the best damn bar in Hawaii,” praising its perfectly imperfect vibe and real service that makes every visit memorable.
One of the highlights of Smith’s is its approachable drink menu where the Dirty Shirley and cider stand out as favorites. These selections perfectly complement the laid-back yet vibrant environment—a place where cold, well-crafted drinks are savored amidst lively conversation and shared memories. The bartenders here add a personal touch that truly elevates the experience: friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable, they are very much the soul of Smith’s. Regulars and visitors alike appreciate personalities like Michael, whose warmth and charm leave lasting impressions.
What truly sets Smith’s apart is its authentic embrace of local culture and history. Customers repeatedly mention the genuine local crowd and the welcoming, inclusive vibe where visitors are made to feel part of the community. Will Leboeuf’s experience of finding a “hidden gem” here, with patrons receptive and prices refreshingly fair compared to typical tourist traps, captures the bar’s true value—it’s an unpretentious, deeply Hawaiian watering hole where you can relax and soak in the real island essence.
Whether you’re a history buff eager to sip your drink amid echoes of WWII, a traveler looking for an experience beyond the typical, or a local craving an honest place to unwind, Smith’s Union Bar delivers a powerful sense of place and connection. It’s the kind of spot where a quick stop becomes an unforgettable evening, complete with cold drinks, great storytelling, and the unmistakable warmth of Hawaii’s heart.

Look, if you're searching for fancy napkins and a blast of arctic air conditioning, just keep walking. This ain't it. Smith's is the real deal. It's hot, it's a little dirty, and it's wonderfully full of locals. This is a bartender's bar. The atmosphere is perfect, the service is real, and it's easily the best damn bar in Hawaii. Five stars. Oldest bar on Oahu. Serviced our men and women in uniform throughout WWII. If those walls could talk! Divey and dim. Loud and perfect. Go just so you can say you've been. Cold drinks and history. What more could you ask for?
Excellent experience and meeting super friendly and memorable bar tender names Michael! What a surprise when you walk around town rather than drive we happened to pass this amazing bar with such History and memorable experience and pictures to brag about. I lived only 4 blocks away in 1990s and never walked around down town but had a lovely Sunday afternoon walking around China Town and visiting this amazing memorable bar with such History
During our stay in Hawaii we found this hidden gem of a bar. All the customers we receptive of us and the bar tenders were on point. It definitely beat the hell out of paying tourists prices most everywhere else. I sent some Louisiana things and hope they get hung in the bar. Also look closely at the top of the walls is like the hull of a Battleship
Oldest bar on the island. Catered to men on the USS Arizona back in the day. Stopped by for a quick drink and ended up staying for a couple. Bartender was super friendly. Former marine and very engaging.
I was out and about basically reminiscing. This bar was the 1st bar my mother worked at and this is before I was born. Matter of fact She met my dad there He was Navy. She'll talk about how hard it will be trying to convince a man that he's been cut off? She said " I felt more like a bouncer then a bar maid". She'll say the importance of taking care of a man in uniform, especially if they are far from home. Never take advantage because they are drunk and don't soak them out of what may need to go home. Wisdom to live by..
Cool ambiance, very friendly service and a wide selection of drinks. Got two glasses of good Kentucky whiskey as a nice ending of my visit to Chinatown Honolulu.
